Achieving goals through technology + data

Notitia congratulates Bubup Wilam Aboriginal Child + Family Centre who took out the hugely deserved Education Award, during 2023's National NAIDOC Week, on Saturday.

Bubup Wilam, meaning “Children’s Place” in Woi Wurrung language, is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Education, Health and Wellbeing organisation.

With the vision to support "children who are proud and have a strong Aboriginal identity as their foundation for lifelong learning, health, and wellbeing" Notitia has been grateful to work alongside Bubup Wilam to help them to achieve their data strategy goals in 2023.

Both a long daycare and kindergarten program, Bubup Wilam also provides "wrap around services" for their children and their families, CEO Lisa Thorpe says.

"We employ a doctor, a half day a week, who comes to Bubup and does health checks with our aboriginal health worker, we also have a NDIS speech therapist and a children's mental health counsellor where we actually do counselling with the child or the families," she says.

"The program starts off the day with the smoking ceremony, they also raise the flag and acknowledge country every day.

"The biggest focus is about the child's identity, who they are - this is the first so-called institution outside of their homes."

Lisa says this "sets the scene" for when their children go to school, providing a solid grounding for knowing who they are.

"They know how to acknowledge country, their basic skills for the rest of their life - they're going into (schooling) and saying "why don't you raise the flag?" she says.

"They are taking the next lead about changing the way they do their business.

"That's our measure of success, when we see how strong our kids go into the school systems."

Bubup Wilam: empowered through data

Notitia Developer, Brett Earle, has been working closely with Bubup Wilam this year to help them to easily capture, view and report on their data, as well as building a customised web app.

"Building the whole solution for Bubup has been an amazing experience," he says.

"They have developed an Aboriginal childcare centre that makes such a huge impact, a ripple effect in their community.

Brett says that the work the Notitia team has helped Bubup to achieve, has empowered them through data.

"Their brand new app has multiple posting mechanisms and user tracking," he says.

"We've worked closely with Bubup Wilam so that they can gather quality data and use it, very easily, for their reporting and activities like future funding.

"Giving back and solving real world problems is what drives me, and seeing them grow from strength to strength is a great example of why I love doing this work."
