Ask Lisa what “lights her up” about working in tech and she will passionately explain why it is critical for all businesses to build strong data quality, data security, data governance and business process optimisation.
Her sharp focus and eye for detail is the reason why Lisa is able to go into any business, and understand exactly what is required for that client to capture reliable data for improved and informed decision making.
"I have a very pragmatic approach, a solid financial base and curiosity to understand why something is done a certain way, why a particular outcome is sought, and what motivates a person, team, business division or organisation."
How did you transition from being an accountant to technology?
I experienced first-hand as an accountant, the impact of bad quality and missing data on reporting and the ability to generate insights and make recommendations and decisions.
At the start of my career, the IT Project Team at the organisation where I was working, needed a finance/business person to validate and reconcile data.
In my Queensland-based role, I was already extracting much of the sales data from the mainframe into an access database (this was many years before Business Intelligence and Data Lakes were widely adopted) so that the sales and marketing teams could get a better understanding of which products and customers were contributing (or not!) to margin.
These outputs overlapped what the IT Project Team required the Data Warehouse to produce and automate nationally.
As a result, I was brought to Melbourne and into the IT Project Team and pretty much never left the IT/Data/Analytics space - I love it!!
Why is it so important to have an open conversation upfront & how does this impact the outcome of a project?
It is incredibly important for both the client and Notitia to have an open and transparent understanding, to ensure the right solution and the right approach for an analytics activity is undertaken within the client environment.
This includes:
- what needs to be achieved and why
- what needs to be avoided, what is done now that data consumers hate!
- the priorities and timeline of the client
- the key players and beneficiaries (particularly those impacted)
- the implications for existing business processes, decision making, communication and communication channels.
What are some of your top tips for a successful tech project?
- Have a clear understanding of the business problem that needs to be solved.
- Work from the business problem to identify the people, process, technology and IT solutions required to solve that problem, not the other way around!
- Have a clear understanding of the quantifiable business benefits that need to be captured.
- Define the business sponsor and ensure they are visible and proactive. Sponsorship needs to be from BOTH the head of IT as well the head of the business area seeking the change. If the change benefits the majority of the business, that sponsor would ideally be the CEO.
- Understand that the quality (detail and completeness) of data captured, directly influences the value of the analytics output.
- Appetite and willingness from the client to embrace Business Ownership and Stewardship of Data.
- Recognise that changes within the IT landscape or business landscape are likely to impact analytics solutions and a comprehensive and proactive change and impact analysis process needs to be adopted and incorporated.
This is not a pick and mix list; these are all things that need to be clear for a project to be successful and user adoption within the client environment to be optimised and maximised.
